EPA's general size guideline
EPA says that if the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet, in many cases a homeowner can handle cleanup by following its guidance. Larger areas or substantial water damage call for additional caution.
When DIY becomes less attractive
- Growth is widespread or keeps returning
- Water damage was significant
- Mold is inside walls or other concealed areas
- Porous materials are heavily affected
- Sewage or contaminated water was involved
- You suspect HVAC contamination
