Act on the moisture source
Stopping the leak or water entry comes first. EPA guidance emphasizes moisture control and recommends drying wet or damp materials quickly; in many cases, drying within 24–48 hours can prevent mold growth.
Check porous materials
Drywall, insulation, carpet padding, ceiling materials, and wood products can hold moisture. Visible dryness at the surface does not always prove that concealed spaces are dry.
When mold is already present
If you can see growth, smell a persistent musty odor, or discover mold after a major water event, the job may require more than drying alone.
